Tipula palodosa is a very large, slender mosquito. It grows to a length of 30 mm and has extremely long legs. Its chest and abdomen are grey to brown. The larvae of this mosquito hatch underground, where they stay until they're fully grown. They feed on plant roots and plant debris.
The larvae of the crane fly are dangerous field pests. Garden owners will notice them because of the harm they do to lawns. The grass can be badly damaged by infestation with the larvae.
The fully grown pests occur in huge numbers and, since they are attracted by light, they also enter homes and cellars. They are harmless and do not bite.
